EHHS Academic Advising

Are you a current CEHHS student or thinking about changing your major? Please see below.

Schedule an Advising Appointment

If you are currently declared as a major in the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences you should anticipate an advising campaign link from your advisor each semester. This will allow you to schedule an appointment with your assigned advisor.

If you are a:

  • Current UT student pursuing Teacher Education, you may have more than one advisor depending on your licensing area. If you are interested in a licensing area that requires the selection of a major in the College of Arts and Sciences (English Ed, some Secondary Ed programs, etc.) and a minor in our college, you will first need to meet with an A&S advisor. Any Teacher Education student who has met with our office previously should be able to schedule an appointment as described above under “current CEHHS undergraduate students.” If you run into issues, please email your teacher licensure specialist directly or contact our main office at 865-974-8194.
  • Current UT student who has not met with our office before, but hopes to pursue a Teacher Education program, please follow the “Change of major students” procedures listed below.
  • Prospective high school students interested in Teacher Education, please follow the “Prospective Students” step listed below.
  • For transfer students interested in Teacher Education, please follow the “Transfer Students” step listed below.
  • Students who already earned a bachelor’s degree and hope to pursue a post-baccalaureate program, job-embedded program, or additional endorsements, please read the information on the page correlating to your interest area by choosing the hyperlink in this paragraph about initiating a review for your intended program.

Please fill out the request to change your major to CEHHS here. Please fill out the request to add/drop your minor, here.

If you are currently pursuing a major or program outside of our college and want to pursue a CEHHS major or teacher education program, please first complete the form above. You will then hear back from our office with the next available Change of Major drop-in session date and time.  These are happening twice a month on Fridays throughout the semester.  You will receive the zoom link in your follow-up email after you submit your form and required CEHHS attached academic plan.

If you are a new incoming first-year or transfer student for the upcoming semester, you will need to contact Angie Russell at arussel6@utk.edu in Admissions to request a change of major. (Please be aware that a minimum 2.3 GPA will be required for all transfer students and some CEHHS programs require an additional review for transfer admission.) Advising appointments for new incoming students are included as part of the orientation experience, and information will be provided after you register for new student orientation.

For questions regarding the information above, please contact ehhsappts@utk.edu or 865-974-8194.

We are excited about your interest in the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences (CEHHS)! As a first step, we recommend that students contact the UT Admissions Office to schedule a campus tour. Once you have scheduled a tour, you will receive a tour confirmation email that includes information about scheduling a meeting with a CEHHS college advisor or representative if desired. Please note that we have limited advisor availability during peak advising times (September – November and February – April), but will always meet with prospective students as we are able. If you have additional questions, please contact our office at ehhsappts@utk.edu, and we will respond within 2-3 business days.

Welcome to the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences! If you are a newly admitted transfer student or a student who plans to transfer to UT in the near future, please read the information about scheduling an advising appointment here. How to Prepare for an Advising Appointment

You have three advisors:

  • Major Advisor—This is the advisor in your academic field. For all programs that involve a minor, this is your arts and sciences advisor. For students in PreK–K, PreK–3, Elementary Education, Secondary Social Science Education, VolsTeach (majors), Second Language (majors), and Special Education this is an advisor assigned to you from from our advising center once you have arrived on campus.
  • Teacher Licensure Advisor—This is the advisor you see every semester from the time you are interested in teaching until you finish your internship. Again, if you are a teacher education minor, please see your arts and sciences advisor to be cleared.

Advising Campaigns – What you need to know

Twice a year (the Fall and Spring) our advising office participates in Advising Campaigns, which helps our current CEHHS students meet with their advisors as quickly as possible.

Here is our process:

  1. If you are currently assigned to an advisor in our office, you will receive a message from your assigned advisor with information for scheduling an appointment. In this email, you’ll also receive a link that will take you to Vol Academic Connect to schedule an appointment.
  2. You must schedule your appointment using this link.
  3. Advising messages are sent out based on classification and priority status. You can find out your classification by looking at the chart below:
Priority This can be found by looking at your MyUTK or calling One Stop (865-974-1111)
Senior 90 + credit hours earned
Junior 60-89.9 credit hours earned
Sophomore 30-59.9 credit hours earned
Freshman 0-29.9 credit hours earned
What do you need to do?

  • If you have not received your advising link, don’t panic. Make sure that you are assigned to an advisor in our advising office. You can find this on your MyUTK and by checking our Staff Page. If you email your advisor try to wait at least 24 hours before emailing again.
  • If you are pursuing a program in our college and are not assigned a primary or minor advisor in our college, please email ehhsappts@utk.edu.
  • When you receive an email from your advisor, read it entirely first. After reading, click on the link that will take you to your Vol Academic Connect.
  • Follow the instructions for scheduling an appointment. You will receive an email confirmation when your appointment is created. If you do not receive this email, you did not create the appointment and you will need to go through the scheduling process again.
What if there are no appointment slots?

If all appointment slots are taken and you see no availability for a while, try not to panic. We open a new week of availability every Monday (or the start of the week) between 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM. Use the link your advisor sent to check back each Monday and throughout the week for cancellations. Please be patient while working to create availability.

If you have any questions or concerns, you are always welcome to reach out to your advisor directly or email our office at ehhappts@utk.edu or call 865-974-8194. Please try to review your degree audit – DARS – beforehand.
